Puzzle #23: Heyawake

Rules for Heyawake

I'm still learning the in and outs of this genre a bit. This puzzle has a tricky opening. I'm trying to now mostly let the cages do the work, which I find more fun in this size. I might try making a larger one, where the numbers do more of the work. Heyawake is one of the few genres I don't mind solving on a larger scale.

  1. I couldn't find the opening so I tried the obvious forcing 2, which stopped relatively quickly and gave me a 2, and then tried another obvious superforcing move immediately to the bottom left of the 0 which (surprisingly) led to the solution. Is there a simpler way?

  2. I'm not really sure what a forcing move is, but there's a logical way to get the opening around the 0-cage.

  3. Well, what I call a forcing move is a move that implies a lot of other moves. These are good spots for shorter (in memory) and longer (with pencil) TnE. In your puzzle putting a black square to the top right of the 0-cage is one such move, and then to the bottom left is another.
